Hydrogen's Role in Achieving the IRENA 1.5°C Scenario
Here is an article on Hydrogen by IRENA. According to it,
- Hydrogen can contribute 10-12% of the mitigation needed to achieve the IRENA 1.5°C Scenario and meet 12% of final energy demand by 2050.
- Currently, global hydrogen production is about 75 MtH2/yr as pure hydrogen, with an additional 45 MtH2/yr in gas mixtures, equating to 3% of global final energy demand.
- To meet the 1.5°C Scenario, electrolytic hydrogen production must scale up significantly from 0.7 GW in 2021 to 4-5 TW by 2050.
To meet this scenario, companies and countries around the world are undertaking initiatives that can prove key to further progress. Here are some of these initiatives:
- NEL ASA has partnered with Hy Stor Energy to develop the Mississippi Clean Hydrogen Hub (MCHH), which will be the largest zero-carbon, off-grid hydrogen production and salt cavern storage hub in the U.S.
- Honda has unveiled a hydrogen fuel cell-powered Peterbilt semi-truck concept at the ACT Expo in Las Vegas. It is equipped with three 80kW fuel cell modules produced by Fuel Cell System Manufacturing, a joint venture between Honda and GM.
