KLM CEO Sees More Efficient Planes as the Fastest Way to Hit Climate Goals

  • KLM is one airline carrier that  flew the first synthetic kerosene demonstration flight ever between Amsterdam and Madrid.

  • “It’s impossible today to replace 100 percent of fuel by 100 percent, or even 50 percent, of biofuel,” - CEO Pieter Elbers

  • KLM accelerated efficiency improvements by fleet renewal and retiring its last Boeing 747 and transitioning to more fuel-efficient twin-jets like the Boeing 787 for long-haul routes.

  • KLM received its first re-engined Embraer E195-E2 in February, burning nearly 10 percent less fuel than its predecessor (E190) and emitting about a third less carbon per passenger. The airline is also considering orders for Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 Max families to further reduce fuel burn and carbon emissions.

  • European airlines, like Air France, have shifted domestic flights to trains, KLM faces challenges due to the lack of a domestic network. The airline is exploring opportunities to connect passengers to trains, with the replacement of one Amsterdam-Brussels flight with a Thalys train connection.
