Biofuels from microalgae has reached a dead end, at least for now. Could concrete from algae have a rosier future? In contrast to traditional Portland cement, the startup Prometheus Materials’ microalgae-based bio-cement emits little CO2, recycles 95% of water used for production, and presents the potential of sequestering the carbon captured during its growth.

An international team of biologists, chemists and physicists, has succeeded in studying photosynthesis at a molecular level and an ultrafast timescale: a millionth of a millionth of a second. Jeez! Could this open up the potential of crops to yield more for food, fiber or fuels?
