Making Climate Education Effective with

8S

Who needs climate education, really?

The answer is: Everyone and No one.

You see, climate education is complex.

On the one hand,

every one of us can do something effective to transition the planet to a climate stable one.

On the other,

a very large part of the population either

  • Think it is beyond their individual ability to do something about climate, or
  • They have no idea where to begin.

Combine everything above, and you reach a rather confusing status
when it comes to climate education.

Not surprisingly, climate education world over is currently poorly designed, fragmented and as a result, ineffective.

Do we have a magic wand at Clidemy that we can swish and wish away the confusion?

Perhaps not. But we have a framework that we believe will provide

A clear motivation for hundreds of millions to get educated on climate action, and

Clear pathways and enablers to get such
education

We call it the 8S framework, because, well it represents 8 key climate action stakeholders:

Let’s tell you what we mean by each, and why, together, they might just about be able to get a billion plus people in the world to get effective climate education.

But before that, let’s converge on what effective means:

In this context, we define effective education as that which will lead to actions having a positive impact on the environment and climate.

Here’s more about the 8 Ss. Each of the stakeholder segments is critical for effective climate action. The goal of the 8S framework is to use strong drivers to move climate education ahead for each of these segments.

Government

Government and public sector are perhaps the most important stakeholders for climate action, like it or not. While some technology innovations and commercial actions could be driven by pure market forces, a very large proportion of effective climate action will require significant government involvement over the next many decades, for almost every region worldwide.

Effective education for government stakeholders on climate action could thus result in very high impact. That’s the good news. The challenge is, “government” is a very large and diverse sector, with each segment within it bringing its own constraints and characteristics.

Who are the target audience?

To start with, we will be focussing on city administration and provide guidance on decarbonization best practices.

What is the fundamental driver here?

Many cities worldwide have a clear mandate for lowering CO2 emissions, and have evolved detailed climate action plans. As a result, they will be keen to obtain effective guidance.

Industries

Not all industries are equal when it comes to climate action. And even within those industries that are critical for climate action, the types of decarbonization efforts needed, and consequently the education needed for such efforts, will vary significantly from one industry to another.

Clidemy will offer effective, tailored education for each of the key industry segments, with rich support from the consulting arm of EAI that has been helping industries with climate action for over a decade.

The focus of decarbonization education for these industries will be more around redesigning their processes and value chain components for high impact.

Who are the target audience?

We will be focussing on specific stakeholders such as CSO, Energy Managers and other sustainability professionals for the top 20 GHG emission industries

What is the fundamental driver here?

Most of the target industries have clear mandates and urgency for decarbonization, but do not have enough intelligence on many effective decarbonization avenues & solutions.

Investors

Investors are one of the most important and critical stakeholders for climate action, which could require close to trillions of $ invested annually around the world, for decades!

But how well are the investors “educated” on climate action sectors?

Based on our interactions, we feel that most investors are using a cookie cutter approach while investing in climate, whereas such investments might require a much deeper understanding of, and very different investment perspectives and theses.

Who are the target audience?

We will to start with focus on venture capital investors

What is the fundamental driver here?

Many VC investors have poor knowledge of emerging innovation opportunities in climate tech, while at the same time their core work demands that they should identify such opportunities on a continuous basis.

Entrepreneurs

If engineers can provide scalable solutions, entrepreneurs can provide scaled impact.

Entrepreneurs are driven. Given attractive business opportunities, they will somehow find 30 hours in a day to work.

Just imagine if these entrepreneurs are provided focussed education on attractive, impactful climate action opportunities.

Each of them will found a startup, give jobs to dozens, and his/her solutions could provide a positive impact to thousands.

Just imagine if we can ignite the fire in the belly for tens of thousands of entrepreneurs worldwide.

Who are the target audience?

Startups & Entrepreneurs

What is the fundamental driver here?

Business opportunities

Solution Providers

Solution Providers!

Climate action, in order to close the loop, will need solutions to be implemented - whether these are simple solutions such as apparel repair or high tech ones requiring huge R&D & capital outlay.

The climate tech solution provider category is expanding very fast worldwide, and comprises entities all the way from innovative startups to large incumbents who have developed their own versions of low carbon extensions or entirely new product lines.

Is there education needed for this sector? You bet! While the solution providers are well equipped with knowledge about their solution, there are significant gaps in their knowledge about market needs and new markets that could adopt their solutions. Educations in these aspects for this segments could produce significant impact.

Who are the target audience?

We will be focussing on companies that provide emerging solutions that suffer from poor awareness in the end user sectors

What is the fundamental driver here?

For solution providers, faster business growth is a critical need. We will provide guidance to solution providers to increase awareness of their solutions to end users and accelerate their business growth.

Leaders

When it comes to climate action, those in the top management & leadership positions at corporations hold enormous leverage. After all, a very large percentage of greenhouse gas emissions come from the industrial sector, and the executive suite has the power to redesign, and even reset, operations and management to low carbon quickly.

Today, the global corporate top management has a clear imperative to move, and move fast, on climate action because there is the twin pressure on them - from the governments as well as the markets.

Who are the target audience?

Senior and top management in medium and large firms worldwide

What is the fundamental driver here?

Increasing demand for climate action from governments and markets.

Professionals

Who needs climate education? Those who need climate jobs.

As simple as that.

At Clidemy, we are committed to develop an education backbone that can educate hundreds of millions on jobs that can get the planet healthy.

Who are the target audience?

Job seekers in select sectors

What is the fundamental driver here?

Jobs! Careers!

Schools

Catch them young.

Educate them when education is their only “work”.

We are talking about school children.

Today, schools worldwide are quite clueless on the need for, and a way to provide, climate education.

There are over 750 million school going children worldwide.

Imagine if we can figure out a clear way by which schools can impact effective climate education. We can suddenly reach over 750 million people for whom education is the main thing in their lives!

750 million minds that can be moulded to become far more environment, planet and climate conscious adults.

Who are the target audience?

School Children

What is the fundamental driver here?

Education is something they undergo everyday!
