Shaikh Khizar– Masters Student of IITM – on Climate Education – Cli5 @ Clidemy

Cli5 is an effort to get valuable feedback from a wide range of stakeholders about their perceptions about climate education and their suggestions for improving it. It comprises a maximum of five questions, hence the Cli5.

In this post, Shaikh Khizar a student from IIT Madras provides his insights to the questions on climate education.

Why do you think most ordinary people know so little about climate change and related
domains?

They may have thought the term didn’t apply to them, but in my opinion, the
average person is very concerned about the rising cost of vegetables and other
staple foods because they can relate it to their financial plans. In a similar vein, we
need to bring up the topic of climate change so that people understand that if we
don’t take appropriate action to reduce GHG, we will face serious problems.


What types of topics within climate change or sustainability would you like to get educated
on, or learn about?

Now a days I am keen to learn how Web 3.0 will make positive effect in climate
change domain, how terms like carbon credit can help us to see the net zero
challenge through these.


How can we make schools teach more climate education to children – both primary &
secondary school children?

This may sound funny, but in my opinion, rather than assigning homework to
schoolchildren, we should find interesting climate-related YouTube channels
and podcasts.

There is a channel on YouTube climapreneur which is a great initiative towards spreading knowledge at the same time business insight through podcast such things, I think will be helpful where they can learn not only about the climate but also about technology, both of which will be helpful in resolving
these issues.

Then, a task can be assigned to the students to summarise their understanding of these podcasts and videos.

This may cause the following changes in schoolchildren:
o They can study happily through mobile, which has now has become our
basic requirement.
o They will be able to choose nice career in future in the umbrella of sustainability and
technology.
o They can switch their role model to real impact creators instead of film stars.


What role do you think governments should do about climate education?

The government can give intership opportunities to students in rising startups in climate
domain and also conduct climate related hackathon, this way I think government can
give their best.
